Akimbot Is a 3D Action Platformer for Ratchet & Clank Fans
At Summer Game Fest, Restart checked out Akimbot, a 3D action platformer from developer Evil Raptor and Plaion.
Akimbot takes players to a universe inhabited by robots. Players will become Exe, an outlaw hacker forced to team up with a sassy companion bot named Shipset to escape the authorities. What starts as a simple mission is soon anything but, as Exe and Shipset will find themselves thrown into a mission to protect the very universe from a villain named Evilware.
Exe will be able to defeat enemy robots using a variety of guns and other weapons. He’ll also be able to run along walls, break crates to collect currency, use a hookshot to cross large gaps, and even drive vehicles.
It’s hard to describe Akimbot without referencing Ratchet & Clank, as its overall setup and gameplay will feel very familiar to fans of Insomniac’s beloved franchise. That being said, as someone who adores the Ratchet & Clank games, Akimbot’s similarities feel like things to be celebrated, rather than criticized. After playing through just a portion of Akimbot’s first mission at Summer Game Fest, I’m looking forward to seeing more when the game launches in full later this year.
Akimbot hits PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC on August 29, 2024. A free demo is available on Steam.
