August's new game releases have plenty in store for gamers of all persuasions, with a double helping for football fans, fresh off the back of last month's College Football 25.

A smattering of fun little indies, a surprise franchise resurrection from Nintendo, and the Star Wars open world adventure of your middle-school daydreams are lurking in the summery haze, offering you an excuse to escape the heat and head indoors for a spell. Here are the games to look forward to this month.

Nintendo dropped a very cryptic tease ahead of the surprise reveal of the return of Famicom Detective Club in July, after all the hubbub of Summer Games Fest was over. Honestly a perfect fit for the crime mystery franchise, which hasn't had a true new entry since 1997 – aside from a very good Two-Case Collection remake on Switch a couple of years back.

Rounding out the month is a Star Wars story without the lightsabers (as far as we've seen, anyway), as Kay Vess scrounges her way through the Outer Rim underworld as a novice scoundrel in Star Wars Outlaws. We enjoyed what we saw in our Summer Games Fest preview, so if you're looking for the sort of Star Wars game where you play through the grand sci-fi setting as just some grubby little gremlin on a backwater planet, this is your chance.
