At Summer Game Fest, Restart went hands-on with Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, the sequel to 2021’s Cozy Grove, which will allow players to once again become a spirit scout on a quest to help friendly bear spirits and other critters find peace in the afterlife.

Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit sees players stranded on a haunted island after their troop’s bus crashes. Players will meet adorable bear spirits, each with a unique visual theme, who need the player’s help healing from their own personal traumas. As players interact with their new animal friends, they’ll be able to complete quests, dig for buried treasures, decorate their camp, and more.

As players complete quests, they’ll earn spirit logs they can place on their sentient campfire (named Flamey) to gain access to additional areas around the island. At launch, players will be able to befriend and aid eight bears, such as one resembling a box of crayons and another who’s an online streamer, with more coming in future updates.

In addition to offering familiar activities like fishing, Camp Spirit will also introduce scouts to a few new gameplay features, such as a power washing tool (a pufferfish) that will allow players to cleanse dirty objects and even save them from fires. Players will also be able to enter the bears' homes, as well as befriend two new companions: a dog and a snail.

As a mobile title, Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit was designed to be played in short bursts each day, rather than marathon sessions. Once players reach a certain point in the day, some resources (like wood) will run out, creating a natural break in the game. Players can freely continue playing after this point, though they’ll be limited in the actions they can complete.

Finally, players won’t embark on this journey alone, as asynchronous multiplayer support will allow them to visit their friends’ islands and send other players gifts.

At Summer Game Fest, we asked David Edery, studio manager and co-founder of developer Spry Fox, if there were any specific features he can’t wait for players to experience in Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit.

“I was an English major in college and a creative writing minor,” says Edery. “I have always cared about the narrative more than anything else. We put a lot of ourselves into these bear stories and I’m just excited to see how people react to the new bears.”

Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit hits iOS, Android, and Netflix Games June 25, 2024.
