2025 will start off with a bang, as Donkey Kong Country Returns HD hits Switch on January 16. The side-scrolling platformer will challenge players to help Donkey and Diddy Kong reclaim their stolen bananas from the Tiki Tak Tribe.
Donkey Kong Country Returns was originally released on Wii in 2010 and on 3DS in 2013. This HD remake will combine features from both games, including the additional levels that were introduced in the 3DS version of the game.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD will challenge players’ skills across nine worlds and 80 levels, including boss fights. In addition to offering updated graphics, the game will feature an optional “Modern Mode” designed to make the experience easier by giving players extra hearts and items. The “Original Mode” will also be available for those who want to experience the game’s difficulty as it was originally designed.
Players will be able to tackle levels on their own or in two-player local co-op, with the second player controlling Diddy Kong, who’s armed with a jetpack and peanut popgun.
Finally, the game will feature optional motion controls, allowing players to shake their Joy-Con to make Donkey Kong perform specific actions, like pounding the ground.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD will be released on January 16, 2025. The game is now available to pre-order at Walmart.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is Nintendo’s latest Switch remake. The company released multiple remakes in 2024, including Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD.
