Ahead of the release of Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club on August 29, a free demo will be released on the Nintendo eShop giving players the chance to try a good chunk of the narrative murder-mystery experience.
Beginning August 19, players can download the demo to try the game’s Prologue and Chapter 1. On August 22, Chapter 2 will be added to the demo, while Chapter 3 will be added on August 27. If players purchase the full game, they’ll be able to carry over their progress from the demo and pick up right where they left off.
Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is the first new game in the Famicom Detective Club series to be released in 35 years. The game will challenge players to solve a student’s murder by collecting clues and interviewing key characters.
A Nintendo press release offered a synopsis of the game’s storyline:
“In Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, a student has been found dead in a chilling fashion, his head covered with a paper bag with an eerie smiling face drawn on it—much like the victims of Emio, the Smiling Man—a killer of urban legend. Playing as an assistant private investigator, you are tasked with helping police solve this crime, which is reminiscent of a series of unsolved murders from 18 years ago. Has a serial killer returned, or is this the work of a copycat? Are these crimes inspired by the Smiling Man urban legend, or the origin of it?”
Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club will be priced at $49.99. While most of Nintendo’s first-party games are family-friendly, it’s worth pointing out this one has an M rating due to its mature content and themes.
