Just in time for Halloween, Boss Team Games is preparing to release two mature platformers inspired by popular horror franchises: John Carpenter’s Halloween and the Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead.

RetroRealms: Halloween and RetroRealms: Ash vs Evil Dead offer similar gameplay setups, though each game takes players to different thematic locations and features different enemies to defeat. Each game also features a unique twist to the overall RetroRealms storyline.

In both games, the Overlord of the Nightmare Realm has embarked on a quest to take over every universe and fill them with his monsters. In RetroRealms: Halloween, the Overlord recruits Michael Meyers to fill the world with the slain in exchange for his freedom from the asylum, while in RetroRealms: Ash vs Evil Dead, the Overlord steals the Necronomicon from Ash, causing Ash to go on a journey to save the world.

Both games offer 16-bit-style platforming gameplay. Michael Meyers can use a knife to kill enemies, while Ash has his trusty chainsaw. Both characters also have the ability to temporarily enter the Nightmare realm, which converts the current environment to something much more grotesque, but may also reveal hidden pathways and platforms in the process.

As players explore environments in both titles, they can break boxes to receive helpful items, like health pickups, ammo for the character’s secondary weapon, and currency that can be used to purchase permanent upgrades in between levels. For instance, players can purchase upgrades that boost their character’s maximum health.

While both RetroRealms titles can be purchased and played individually, those who buy both (either individually or in a bundle) will unlock additional features, including the ability to bring characters from one game into the other. For example, they could bring Ash into RetroRealms: Halloween to see how the gameplay changes. DLC will also be available, bringing even more characters to the game(s), including Laurie Strode from the Halloween films and Kelly Maxwell from Ash vs Evil Dead.

Check out our gameplay videos to see how the RetroRealms titles look in action. Keep in mind these games have a Mature rating due to their graphic violence and gore (there’s also adult language). We've also muted the music in both games.
