2024 seems to be the year of remakes for Nintendo, with games like Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door having already been released on Switch in 2024.

If you’re looking for even more nostalgic fun, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is now available on Switch! The game is a remake of the original Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, which hit Nintendo 3DS way back in 2013.

In Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, Luigi is reluctantly pulled into another ghostly adventure after the Dark Moon in the sky is shattered, causing the region's friendly ghosts to turn foul. Players will need to use Luigi’s trusty vacuum (called the Poltergust 5000) to defeat and capture ghosts as he searches for the pieces of the Dark Moon across multiple haunted locales.

If you’re new to the Luigi’s Mansion franchise, or you’re just looking for some tips to help you get started on this spooky (yet very family-friendly) adventure, you’ve come to the right place! Keep these tips in mind and you’ll be a master ghost wrangler in no time!

You can customize your experience to suit your tastes

While you’re free to stick with the game’s default controls and settings, you can also customize certain features to suit your gameplay preferences. For instance, by default, the game supports motion controls when aiming, moving the camera, and walking on beams (like a tightrope). However, you can forgo the motion controls and use the analog sticks for these features by disabling the “Motion Sensor” setting in the game’s menu.

As a few other examples, the game also allows you to customize your controls when viewing environments from a first-person perspective and even turn off the Minimap if you’d like more of a challenge when navigating the in-game world.

Suck up everything

While the Poltergust 5000 is mainly designed for sucking up ghosts, it can also be used to interact with a slew of other objects throughout the game. You can use it to yank clothing off of wall hooks, retrieve coins perched in the ceiling rafters, roll up floor rugs to uncover hidden items underneath, and so much more.

If you take the time to thoroughly explore each environment, you’re sure to collect lots of in-game currency, which is required to unlock upgrades as you make your way through the game. Don’t be afraid to experiment and aim Luigi’s vacuum at everything you see, even if items don’t seem significant at first glance – you never know what you’ll uncover!

Don’t forget to backtrack

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD tells players the major actions they need to complete to progress through the game’s story. At the same time, players have the freedom to explore the game’s haunted buildings at their own pace as they make their way to their eventual destination.

This means you’re free to revisit rooms you’ve already been to, which may allow you to interact with items that have reappeared there in order to earn more money (for instance, by sucking up clothing that has reappeared on wall hooks).

Backtracking may also allow you to find special items or access rooms that were previously blocked off. As one example, once you collect the Strobulb, you can backtrack to the Gloomy Manor’s Front Yard and use it to make the large flowers bloom, revealing a hidden collectible.

You can replay levels

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is a level-based experience that tracks various stats for each stage – like how many ghosts you capture and how much health you lose – with your performance resulting in a star rating at the end of the mission (the better you did, the more hearts you’ll earn). If you ever want to try to improve your previous records, you’re free to replay levels. Not only will this ensure you never run out of things to do, but it’s also a great feature for speedrunners, since the game will also track how long it takes you to complete each stage!
