At Summer Game Fest, NetEase showed off Marvel Rivals, its 6v6 team-based shooter featuring a variety of heroes and villains from across the Marvel universe.
According to a NetEase press release, in Marvel Rivals, “the merciless clash between the tyrannical dictator Doctor Doom and his future counterpart from the year 2099 has forced countless universes to collide in the Timestream Entanglement, creating new worlds and conflicts still to be discovered.” In the midst of the chaos, Marvel heroes and villains will be forced to work together to defeat both versions of Doctor Doom.
Marvel Rivals will allow players to battle it out with 19 playable characters, such as Rocket Raccoon, Spider-Man, Hulk, Magneto, Black Panther, and Adam Warlock. Characters are split into three different roles, depending on their specialities: Vanguard, Duelist, or Strategist. Each character has their own unique attacks and special abilities, so there should be someone for every play style.
At Summer Game Fest, Restart went hands-on with Marvel Rivals and quickly found a few favorite characters, like Namor with his powerful trident and Hela, whose ultimate ability causes her to float in the air for a few seconds, giving players the chance to rain powerful attacks on enemies from above.
In addition to using each hero or villain’s unique attacks, Team-Up Skills will allow players to combine forces to bring the pain to the opposing team.
Battles in Marvel Rivals will take place on destructible maps from across the Marvel Multiverse, including a Tokyo 99: Spider-Islands map. Additional characters and maps will come to the game during each in-game season.
