At Summer Game Fest, Atlus revealed the latest trailer for Metaphor: ReFantazio, a fantasy RPG from the creators of Persona 3, 4, and 5.

Metaphor: ReFantazio takes players to The United Kingdom of Euchronia, which has been thrown into turmoil following the king’s assassination. To make matters worse, the kingdom’s prince, who is very much alive, is believed to be dead. Players will follow the game’s protagonist and his fairy partner, Galica, on a quest to remove the curse that has been placed on the prince. Along the way, they’ll find themselves part of a tournament for the kingdom's throne.

At Summer Game Fest, Restart went hands-on with Metaphor: ReFantazio and experienced the game’s stylish combat and visuals first-hand. As players explore dungeons, they’ll be able to attack enemies in real-time before entering turn-based combat. During battles, players can perform actions with their standard characters, as well as call on the Archetypes that lie within each one to perform more powerful moves.

ReFantazio will feature 14 basic Archetypes (things like a Magician, Thief, Seeker, and Monk), which each have a lineage of additional Archetypes that can be unlocked over time. In all, the game will feature more than 40 Archetypes for players to discover, including options like the Masked Dancer, Summoner, and Berserker.

As players explore the game world, they’ll travel to different destinations in their “Gauntlet Runner” ship. Rather than choosing a destination and instantly arriving, traveling will take time, giving players the chance to explore the Gauntlet Runner, talk with their companions, read books, and even cook dishes that can provide valuable bonuses during battles (for instance, one dish may remove the “Burn” status from a character).

By completing actions inside the Gauntlet Runner, players may be able to boost their hero’s stats. For instance, during the Summer Game Fest demo, we read a book that improved our hero’s Imagination. Players can also sleep in one of the ship’s capsule beds if they’d rather not complete any other activities.

Metaphor ReFantazio launches on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC October 11, 2024. Physical and digital pre-orders are available now, with the game having two pre-order bonuses: the Archetype EXP Chest Set and the Adventurer’s Journey Pack.
