Minecraft's Tetris DLC Challenges Players With Puzzles and an Evil Tetrimonster
Following the release of an official Tetris add-on in the Minecraft Marketplace earlier in 2024, new Tetris DLC has launched in the game’s online store, allowing players to test their skills across a unique combination of puzzle gameplay and dungeon crawling.
In this Tetris DLC, the Tetrimonster has grown tired of watching players incorrectly place Tetriminos (playing pieces) during games of Tetris and has busted out of the game on a quest for revenge.
The DLC begins with a seemingly normal game of Tetris, with players challenged to arrange Tetriminos in such a way as to form complete horizontal lines that are removed from the screen. Once the game ends, the Tetrimonster transforms the playing field into a dungeon for players to explore.
If you think of each dungeon as a Tetris playing board, players will begin at the base of the board and are challenged to reach the Tetrimonster at the top. They’ll begin with only a few tools, like a wooden sword, a few pieces of leather armor, and a limited selection of food, but they’ll be able to find additional resources as they explore. This includes better weapons, additional food, and various crafting materials, among others (for instance, we quickly found a Stone Sword to replace our wooden one).
Players are also equipped with a unique pickaxe that can only be used to mine Mino Shards, a special crafting resource that can be turned into Tetrimino pieces. These pieces can then be inserted into small Tetris boards found throughout the dungeon to unlock new pathways. Mino Shards can also be used to create Tetris-themed armor.
Dungeons aren’t timed, so players can explore each corridor as thoroughly as they’d like as they progress. Along the way, they’ll need to watch out for evil Tetrimino pieces that will attack them but can also be defeated like normal Minecraft mobs.
If players die in a dungeon, they won’t drop their gear. Rather, they’ll simply respawn at the beginning of the dungeon and can pick up where they left off. An Ender Chest is also available, allowing players to store extra items they want to hold onto but may not have room for in their inventory at the time.
Once players confront the Tetrimonster at the end of the dungeon, they won’t be able to battle the villain directly. Instead, it will send out one of its minions, which come in the form of more powerful Tetriminos. After one of these bosses is defeated, it will join the player’s team and its shape will become available to use in the creation of future dungeons. Since each dungeon has a unique design, players can use a map to view their current location in the field.
As players clear dungeons, their inventory and the contents of their Ender Chest will remain going into the next dungeon. This will allow them to slowly but surely accumulate more resources (like iron nuggets), which can be turned into better items, making them stronger over time. The dungeons themselves will also receive a difficulty boost as players progress.
While players are free to explore each dungeon on their own, this DLC also supports multiplayer for some cooperative play. Plus, owners can play the classic game of Tetris in the game’s lobby, with three modes being available: Marathon, Sprint, and Ultra.
Minecraft’s Tetris DLC is priced at $8.99 or 1,510 Minecoins. You can check it out for yourself right here.
