Publisher THQ Nordic has revealed a new Darksiders game is on the way.

The brief teaser for the hack-and-slash series’ revival arrived as part of the THQ Nordic Showcase 2024 – catch up on the full run of trailers and announcements from the show here – which closed with a minute-long shot of a location unmistakable for Darksiders fans. Take a look below:

The announcement trailer begins all bubbling lava, firm rock walls, and chains – fairly standard fare in fantasy video games, we’re sure you’ll agree. But eventually the flaming stone faces of the Charred Council light up, turning things unmistakably Darksiders. The mysterious entities behind much of the series' complicated narrative utter but one thing: “Horseman." The teaser ends with the message: "Be prepared to ride again…"

What could a new Darksiders game be?

Beyond the simple teaser, THQ Nordic is keeping quiet on details for now. It’s not yet clear if the new game will be the fourth – and presumably final – core entry in the series. If that’s the case, expect the plot to follow the last horseman, Strife. The twin-pistol-wielding rider of Mayhem previously appeared in spinoff Darksiders Genesis and at the end of Darksiders 3.

Strife’s siblings have all had dedicated adventures already. The series began with War in 2010’s Darksiders. Next up was Death in 2012’s Darksiders 2. Finally, Fury took the lead in the most recent 2018 action-adventure Darksiders 3. The timelines of the previous games overlap significantly, with Strife’s movements during his siblings' outings remaining somewhat shrouded in mystery.

Alternative potentials for this new Darksiders game include another spinoff like Darksiders Genesis, or a remaster/remake of one of the older games from the series. War’s original outing would be the most likely candidate for the latter, given its age and prime place in establishing the narrative of an apocalyptic clash between heaven and hell, unleashed before its time. Whatever form the new Darksiders game takes, THQ Nordic has stated that we won’t need to wait very long until we learn more.
