Embody the spirit of speedrunning competition straight from your couch (or even on the go) thanks to the launch of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition on Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition packs in 150 time-based challenges to take on. Your goal? Perfecting your pace in search of a record time. The collections of retro tasks are drawn from 13 classic NES games, including Super Mario Bros., Kirby’s Adventure, Donkey Kong, Metroid, and more. Challenges range in length from mere seconds to a matter of minutes, but the goal of keeping that clock low remains the same throughout. A worthy mission for anyone inspired by the recent Summer Games Done Quick 2024 speedrunning performances.

Each game challenge in Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition comes with a brief introduction and guide video to demonstrate the win condition. After that, it’s up to you to replicate and refine that into your peak performance. Failing during a level will see you rewind instantly to start again, but be warned: the clock keeps ticking.

If beating your own times isn’t incentive enough, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition supports online and local multiplayer. Playing online, you can compete against the ghosts of other players across three rounds in Survival Mode, where the slowest half of the group is eliminated after each challenge.

The World Championships mode holds five weekly challenges. These can be replayed as often as you like to get the best score possible while the event is live. At the end of the week, you’ll earn a place in the scoreboard and will even be able to see how the fastest player pulled off their time.

For local play, up to eight players can join the action in Party Mode. Here, you can take on challenges simultaneously in split screen, earning scores across multiple games before a final winner is crowned.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition has launched primarily as a digital game via the Nintendo eShop, but a physical release is available through the Deluxe Set. Along with the physical game, this special edition packs in a replica NES game cartridge, 13 art cards, and pins modeled after those players can unlock and equip in the game.
