The game’s next three-month season will focus on pocket monsters from the Galar region of the Pokemon universe.

Pokemon Go’s next season, Max Out, kicks off September 3, and it will pack quite a punch, bringing new Pokemon, quests, and the Dynamax phenomenon to the free-to-play mobile game. The season will run through December 3.

The Dynamax phenomenon was introduced in the Pokemon Sword and Shield video games, which were released on Switch in 2019. It causes Pokemon to become much larger than life when competing in Pokemon battles.

Beginning in September, Pokemon Go players will be able to visit special Power Spots on the in-game map and collect Max Particles. Dynamax Pokemon will appear at these Power Spots for players to battle. From the season's trailer (below) and artwork (pictured above), Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard will be three of the Pokemon we’ll see undergo the Dynamax transformation in Pokemon Go.

The Max Out season will also bring new Pokemon to the game that were originally “discovered” in the Galar region of the Pokemon universe, which also happens to be the setting for Pokemon Sword and Shield. This will include Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble, the three starting Pokemon from the Sword and Shield games, as well as their evolutions. Players will be able to choose one of these starting Pokemon to encounter for free through the game’s seasonal questline.

On top of these starter Pokemon, Stonjourner will be available to encounter solely in the U.K. (the real-world inspiration for the Galar region), and Dreepy and its evolutions will be added at the beginning of the “Go All Out” limited time event that also begins September 3. Additional Galarian Pokemon will make their way to the game throughout the Max Out season.

As with previous in-game seasons, Max Out will see different Pokemon spawn in the wild while in cities, forests, and elsewhere. Eggs will have the chance to contain different Pokemon, and a number of in-game bonuses will be active (including the return of the beloved Candy XL trading bonus):

  • Increased experience points for a seven-day PokeStop streak
  • Increased experience points and Stardust for a seven-day Pokemon catch streak
  • Increased experience points from reaching a new in-game Friendship level
  • One additional Candy when trading Pokemon
  • Players Level 31 and above will receive one guaranteed Candy XL when they trade Pokemon
