Park simulation fans have another dose of design fun to look forward to this year, as RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic now has a Nintendo Switch release date of December 5.
Snow and cold temperatures might keep folk away from the real deal, but digital roller coasters can bring screams to our screens throughout the darker months of the year. The remastered package first released on Android and iOS in 2016, making the leap to PC a year later. Eight years later, the park is now ready to open its Nintendo Switch wing, bringing pixelated park planning to Nintendo’s hybrid console.
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic (Nintendo Switch)
Release Date: December 5, 2024
Digital Only
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic features “the best features” from RollerCoaster Tycoon (1999) and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 (2002), granting players the ability to manage parks from an isometric view, adapting the landscape as they craft complex coasters and attractions to pull in crowds and revenue.
The Nintendo Switch port, which was handled by Graphite Lab, is the first release of the game on current-gen consoles. It features a redesigned UI built for console controls. The release should be great news for Switch owners who have been eying Planet Coaster 2’s recent PS5 and Xbox Series launch enviously.
Ethan Stearns, VP of Games Publishing at Atari, had the following to say about the announcement in the official press release:
“Fans of RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic have been hoping for a Switch version and we are excited to bring it to the platform. Our partners at Graphite Lab did an amazing job translating RCT Classic’s detailed keyboard-based controls to controller input.
Bringing RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic to the Switch, with its massive install base, is an opportunity to re-engage lapsed players, provide active players with another great hardware platform, and reach a new generation of players who will now discover the franchise on the Switch.”
Over in the realm of real theme parks, Nintendo recently unveiled the Donkey Kong section of Universal Studios' Super Nintendo World area in Japan with a charming guided tour by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto. Minecraft theme park attractions also look to be on the way to the U.S. and U.K. soon thanks to a partnership between developer Mojang Studios and Merlin Entertainments.
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic releases December 5 on Nintendo Switch. If you’re desperate for console-based park planning before then, Planet Coaster 2 may sate that coaster-concocting urge until the remaster arrives.
