At Gamescom, 2K and Firaxis revealed Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, the latest installment in the long-running turn-based strategy franchise that lets players build their own civilizations by taking on the roles of iconic leaders from throughout history.

Like in previous Civilization games, Civ VII will allow players to bring their empire through different Ages (or time periods), becoming more advanced along the way. However, in Civ VII, Ages are more distinct, separate gameplay sections than in previous titles.

According to 2K and Firaxis, “[e]ach Age is its own rich, nuanced journey, with unique playable civilizations, available resources, explorable land, and even entire gameplay systems, creating a deep, historically immersive strategy experience.” At the beginning of each Age, players will be able to select from a variety of “new Age-relevant civilization options determined by [their] prior gameplay accomplishments.”

Civ VII will allow players to choose from a variety of historical leaders, each with their own special ability. Leaders can also be customized over time. Plus, players will be able to select their leader separately from their civilization to create a game that best fits their play style and tastes.

Multiplayer matches will support cross-play, so players on different platforms can play the game together. These matches can have different lengths, with support for matches that last only a single Age.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will launch on PlayStation consoles, Xbox consoles, Switch, PC, Mac, and Linux on February 11, 2025. The game will only be available digitally on PS4.

Civ VII will be available in three editions. Here’s the breakdown:

The Standard Edition will be priced at $59.99 on Switch and $69.99 on PlayStation consoles, Xbox consoles, PC, Mac, and Linux. Players who pre-order the Standard Edition will receive the Tecumseh and Shawnee Pack.

The Deluxe Edition will be available for $89.99 on Switch and $99.99 on all other platforms. Buyers will receive early access to the game starting February 6, 2025. It will include everything from the Deluxe Edition, along with the post-launch Right to Rule Collection DLC and the Founders Content Pack.
