The world’s biggest PC strategy game, Teamfight Tactics (TFT), which is based on the champions and items from League of Legends, is bringing back Reckoning: Dawn of Heroes in its latest set revival. Set revivals are temporary game modes where Teamfight Tactics revitalizes old champions and traits from previous sets by applying learnings from modern TFT to improve the player experience.
With Teamfight Tactics Revival: Dawn of Heroes available until November 4, the team at Riot spoke with two TFT devs to collect 10 tips and tricks to help you revisit an epic moment in the game’s history and play the latest game mode.
If you’re newer to Teamfight Tactics, what advice would you give to players getting started with Revival: Dawn of Heroes?
- Christina Jiang, Senior Product Manager: “New players can focus on learning how to play one meta composition or even just focusing on a single trait to start out. New players can reference beginner guides from creators like Frodan or search meta comps on Mobalytics to find their gameplay style. Once they master the basics, the knowledge of the various systems and strategies in Revival: Dawn of Heroes should come more naturally. One of my favorite things about TFT has always been that while it is ultimately a strategy game, it can be enjoyed by going as deep or as surface level as you want!”
- Keane Tan, Principal Game Designer: “I guess just have fun! The mode is designed to be less competitive in terms of stakes, and there’s even a Golden Item Remover to give players more flexibility when itemizing their champions, so players can relax a little and experiment with different combinations. This is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse of how TFT looked three years ago, so I suggest not to take winning or losing too seriously, play around with the Set content as much as you like, and immerse yourself in Revival: Dawn of Heroes!”
How does this advice vary if you’ve played TFT before, but it’s been a while since you queued up?
- Christina: “Regardless if you’re a new or returning player, getting comfortable with one or two compositions to start is generally a solid approach to learning the new set revival. I would encourage all players, especially the more experienced ones, to enjoy the process of finding wacky compositions that have only become powerful due to the modernization of the set revival!”
- Keane: “Experienced players can afford to experiment more with the tools that we provide them! Besides the nostalgia of playing classic Dawn of Heroes comps, such as Chug Bug and Dawnbringer Karma, veteran players can also cook refreshing new comps that couldn’t be done in the original Dawn of Heroes, such as what kind of Two Tanky or Built Different comps can be done with this set!”
Augments didn’t exist when the original set came out—what should players keep an eye out for?
- Christina: “Adding Augments to Revival: Dawn of Heroes opens up new ways to play this classic set. Players should especially keep an eye out for the new Trait and Champion Augments that change the way even traditional verticals can be played. For example, now that the Abomination emblem is more accessible, I’m excited to see the creative ways players end up itemizing the Monstrosity carry in the Monstrous Chopper Trait Augment.”
- Keane: “Augments also give players more tools to play their favorite way, be it easier rerolls with Prismatic Ticket, a healthy econ with Raining Gold, or an early win streak with a strong Combat Augment. Players can use this tool to augment their unique playstyle as they explore the set again!”
What do players need to know about Radiant Items in Revival: Dawn of Heroes?
- Christina: “As the name suggests, Radiant Items are the no-downside, more powerful versions of regular items. At Stage 3-6, players can select from an armory of Radiant Items for their team. I would recommend choosing an item that pairs well with your primary carry or tank, if you haven’t fully itemized them yet.”
- Keane: “Ah! We added a little animated ceremony for the Set Mechanic of the original Dawn of Heroes! This is largely because we are keeping the mechanics unchanged, but wanted to make them stand out to the players so they would not miss them! On Stage 3-6, each player will receive a choice of Radiant item, so players can plan around this coming to know which items they want to slam early. I would aim to build up to two carry items and two tank items, so when I get the Armory I am flexible enough to choose the third piece.”
What should players keep in mind when placing their units on the board when playing Revival: Dawn of Heroes?
- Christina: “One of the joys of reviving past sets is showing players all the broken stuff that used to be commonplace in older sets, but no longer exists in modern sets. In Revival: Dawn of Heroes, be sure to scout opponents’ boards because they may very well have assassins that can snipe your backline carry or even a singular Thresh that can pull your corner unit out of safety and into harm’s way.”
- Keane: “Back in the day, a tactic was to sometimes equip defensive items like Quicksilver Sash on your backline carries to protect them against assassins. Maybe try it out if you find your Aphelios getting harassed too much by those pesky assassins! Oh, and don’t forget the Golden Item Remover is useful to re-itemize your champions, so feel free to try different things to see what works.”
We all love a good in-game easter egg—what are some of your favorite easter eggs in Revival: Dawn of Heroes?
- Christina: “While the original Dawn of Heroes mid-set removed Shadow Items in favor of Radiant items, we couldn’t help but pay homage to the original set mechanic in Reckoning. We added an Augment that may make you miss Shadow items as well!”
- Keane: “We have another Augment called Road to Redemption which is actually just a very silly pun around the Redeemed redeeming a Redemption. It is a surprisingly good Augment – the healing effect scales really well with the defensive gain from dead Redeemed units, so the last one standing can gain quite a bit of Effective Health. And while Redemption isn’t the best item for Redeemed, chances are Redeemed players don’t want to build a lot of Tank items, so it is relevant to receive a free one to put on your Rell in the late game.”
What are your favorite champions in Revival: Dawn of Heroes?
- Christina: “Keane will probably mention Viego, so I’ll focus on a different 5-cost: Gwen! I love splashing her into various comps because she holds emblems quite well and her snip spell is so satisfying to watch.”
- Keane: “Ahhh yes, Viego, my ‘favorite’ Champion! He was so broken when the team first began reviving the set; Forgotten and Skirmishers were giving out way too many stats, Assassins are hard to counter, his Mana cost is low, and his stun is long. I guess the effort to balance him paid off in the end. He is a flexible 5-cost Champion to play, and can easily disable a backline carry. An enemy Teemo is giving you too much trouble? No problem, just stick a Viego at the opposite end!”
What comps would you recommend new players try out when playing Revival: Dawn of Heroes?
- Christina: “Playing reroll comps is a solid choice for beginners looking to learn the basics of TFT and the new set revival. I would recommend Abomination reroll if you want to see the infamous Monstrosity rise from the grave to fight for your team, or Hellion reroll to watch adorably heinous Doppelhellions emerge from the Hellion portal. For extra fun, we created trait augments for both verticals—the Monstrous Chopper for Abomination and Fiendish Farewell for Hellion!”
- Keane: “Building around a 4 & 5-cost carry has always been my go-to recommendation for beginners to pick up the basic concepts of TFT. The general playstyle would be to build a strong board towards Level 8, then find the higher cost Champion you want, and equip them with strong items—which would expose the basic concepts of tempo, econ, and itemization to new players. Especially for Revival: Dawn of Heroes, you can build those items early and transfer them to the higher-cost carries later using the Golden Item Remover. For example, if you are playing Sentinel Cannoneers, you can equip Senna with carry items like Runaan's Hurricane for winning the early game rounds, and use the Remover to transfer them to Lucian and Akshan in the late game!”
How does the revival ladder work? What’s exciting about this addition?
- Christina: “We’re really excited for players to try the Revival Ladder, a new progression system for Revival: Dawn of Heroes, which is meant to give players a feeling of progression beyond just winning and losing. Players can earn Strategy Points (SP) by simply playing the set revival and earn bonus SP from “skills” they allocate to at each rank on the Revival Ladder. Players can select one skill per rank and each skill stacks, reflecting in-game decisions players can make, such as earning bonus SP for each win in their longest win streak. With the Revival Ladder, we’re experimenting with new ways to reward players for both their skill and how they play TFT. Please check it out and provide us feedback!”
- Keane: “I’m definitely going to fill all the Skills that fit my favorite playstyle of High Risk / High Reward and see how fast I can get to Visionary among my group of friends! Yes, it is not about ‘if’ I will get to Visionary but ‘when’!”
