Get your game on together without spending loads of money thanks to these great free games on Xbox Game Pass, PS Plus, and Steam in October!

With Halloween horrors gathering at night, it’s best to keep your buddies close by, even if only in digital form. To that end, we’ve rounded up the best free games you can play with your friends in October 2024. As usual, we’ve scoured Steam, Xbox Game Pass, and PlayStation Plus to find the most entertaining new additions you can enjoy with your friends without splashing any extra cash – especially if you’re eager to escape the influx of horror games elsewhere. Here are our free game picks to play with friends this month.

We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie

It’s the sense of progress that makes Katamari so satisfying. Roll a ball around, picking up more and more, growing ever larger. You’ll start small on a house floor, then work your way up to welcoming elephants and entire apartments into your fold. It’s a simple, silly, and enduring concept. And We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie is a remaster of one of the series’ best entries.

Two-player local co-op is on offer here (no online, sorry), with each player pushing on one half of the Katamari. It’s certainly more challenging than going solo, but it makes for a fairly mindful experience and a great opportunity for a chilled-out chat as you guide your ever-swelling sphere about each level.

All You Need is Help

You’ll need a group of exactly four to enjoy this quirky puzzle game which brings pieces to life. Each player controls a polygonal shape which trots around on small feet, aiming to plonk down into defined markers on the ground. The catch is that each shape can’t rotate on its own. To find your place, you’re going to need some help from your friends.

All You Need is Help supports online and local play (or a combination of the two) but we reckon it’s best enjoyed when sharing the same room with your pals. Raucous noise is sure to ensue as you collaboratively navigate mazes and obstacles, spinning one another into the correct orientations. And as if the core concept wasn’t cute enough, there are several customization options to adorn your entertainingly expressive shape faces with glasses, hats, and more.

WWE 2K24

Even if wrestling isn’t your jam, you’d have to work hard to avoid having fun when smacking your friends over the head with a chair, all while dressed in no more than a sparkling pair of underpants. When no one knows what they’re doing, WWE 2K24 matches are a whirlwind of hilarious button bashing, leading to accidental throws, takedowns, and plenty of laughter. Well worth whipping out for a game night or two.

And if you are into wrestling? WWE 2K24 marks the latest iteration in a series that has been steadily improving upon a fine, muscle-flexing core. You’ve got a plethora of modes to play with, and when you’re done suplexing your siblings or friends, you can get stuck into the solo modes which include voice acting from the actual wrestling stars.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus

  • Players: 1 (+ local friends for emotional support)
  • Available for free on: PlayStation Plus

No, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus isn’t actually multiplayer. But honestly? You’re going to need a friend beside you when you play. Someone to help make decisions, and to turn to in shock and disbelief. Just trust us. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus sets itself up as a cutesy visual novel in which you attempt to woo your crush in the after-school literature club. But that Psychological Horror tag is on the game for a reason.

Be warned: Doki Doki Literature Club Plus deals with some very dark and mature themes. It has an ESRB Mature 17+ rating for a reason. But if you’re old enough and intrigued, it’s a fascinating and unique experience that makes for a harrowing group play session as you collectively delve into its shadier depths. One for those after some less conventional horror in the month of scares.

Gum Ball Run

  • Players: 1-15 (online only)
  • Available for free on: Steam

Put your platforming skills to the test this month with Gum Ball Run’s ridiculous online races. This simple (and sometimes buggy) free-to-play speedfest sees you bounding through procedurally generated obstacle courses that force you to figure out routes while on the fly. Often literally. Sorta like Fall Guys, but played at lightning pace and starring tiny orbs with legs. There are even a wealth of customization options to unlock. Gum Ball Run supports up to 15 players per race, making it ideal for a generating a cacophony of laughter across a couple of game nights.
