At Summer Game Fest, Restart went hands-on with The Dragon Prince: Xadia, an upcoming mobile game inspired by the popular Netflix animated series The Dragon Prince.

The Dragon Prince: Xadia is set after the third season of the Netflix series, in a time when humans and elves are beginning to work together. The three-player action-RPG will see players embark on adventures around the series’ universe (traveling to both familiar and new locations), and meet new NPCs, defeat enemies, collect gear, and more along the way.

While The Dragon Prince: Xadia is part of an established narrative universe, at Summer Game Fest, developer Wonderstorm assured Restart players won’t have to be existing fans of the franchise to jump right into this mobile experience, as it will provide players with enough context to get up to speed.

The Dragon Prince: Xadia will allow players to choose from multiple playable characters (such as Callum, Viren, Soren, and Claudia), who each have a series of abilities that can be triggered during the game’s real-time battles. Some abilities require resources to pull off, though most can be used in an unlimited fashion with a cooldown period between each activation.

Characters can level up over time to become stronger, and players can also equip them with upgradable gear. To give the experience more personalization, each character can be equipped with different cosmetic outfits and pets who will follow them around.

Xadia will allow players to complete quests on their own, work together with strangers, and team up with friends to complete quests through an invite code system (again, multiplayer teams support up to three players). The game will offer shorter expeditions designed to be completed in a few minutes (perfect for a mobile game experience), in addition to longer missions designed to last 10-15 minutes, and even large dungeons that can take up to an hour to complete.

An in-game shop will allow players to purchase goods (like healing items), as well as upgrade their character’s abilities.

The Dragon Prince: Xadia will feature voice acting from the cast of the animated series, and major story moments from the game will be considered part of the series’ canon. At the same time, since the game gives players the freedom to combine heroes and villains on the same team, these unique character combinations (which contradict the franchise’s storyline) will not be considered part of the official lore.

Finally, Xadia won’t feature microtransactions, though it will allow players to unlock special content through limited-time events.

The Dragon Prince: Xadia hits iOS and Android through Netflix Games on July 30, 2024. The game will require a Netflix subscription to play.

Season six of The Dragon Prince premieres on Netflix July 26.
